The Many Layers of Kathy Sosa

Artist, designer and gallery owner Kathy Sosa reinvented herself four years ago after deciding to step off the fast track of the advertising world and moved with her husband Lionel Sosa to a small town outside of San Antonio, Texas.

The couple re-created a classic Texas farmhouse from the ground up and an existing shed on the property was turned into a studio for Lionel, who had painted artistically as a hobby for years, and for friends and family who joined in on the weekends.

Tired of just watching the group paint, Kathy picked up a paintbrush for the first time at age 48. She began developing a unique style of mixed media portraiture which are a collage of oils and interior textiles and wallpapers – a perfect combination for an artist who is also a decorator.

Fast forward to four years later: Limited edition prints of Kathy Sosa‚Äôs work has been sold in a national home d?©cor retail chain, she has been commissioned by the Texas Conference of Women to paint design icon Martha Stewart and presented it to her personally, and she opened her own gallery in a painstakingly restored historic building near the Alamo where she displays her work and that of other family members with whom she began painting.

Citing influences of Modigliani and Matisse, Sosa’s canvas works show the strikingly bold use of color, as well as the unexpected integration of textiles and wallpapers into multi-media portrait collages.

My style combines wallpapers and textiles with oil portraits to produce stylized paintings of people in their own unique environments. The intended result is fine art laced with strong, distinct decorative elements. The people in these paintings are colorful in every sense of the word and I aim to create a setting for each that reinforces and communicates their mood and personality.”

A former Inc. Magazine Entrepreneur of the Year, Ms. Sosa has a long creative background, though her talents were focused in marketing and advertising. Prior to forming Sosa Consultation & Design with her husband, Lionel Sosa, Mrs. Sosa served as president of Garcia LKS, the Southwest’s largest independent Hispanic ad agency, which she founded as KJN in 1987. In her 20 years in marketing, most of them as an ad agency principal and entrepreneur, she has worn a number of hats, among them strategist, planner, creative director and copywriter.

Her creative work has earned numerous awards including the American Advertising Federations Best of Show; “Telly” Awards for excellence in national and regional television advertising and the coveted “One Show” Award for Public Service (PSA) copywriting. Her interiors have earned recognition from the AIA. Mrs. Sosa holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in political science, both from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.
